Apalachicola Lowlands Preserve Tour

Join Coastal Plains Institute President Ryan Means for a morning exploring CPI’s Apalachicola Lowlands Preserve. This 80-acre inholding within the western Apalachicola National Forest used to be a slash pine plantation and is being restored to native longleaf pine savannah through regular burning. We’ll walk a nature trail discovering plants, animals, and discussing the delicate ecological relationships that make the longleaf pine savannah so biologically diverse. We’ll also learn about the many management techniques that CPI is using to restore the property back to a healthy, diverse longleaf pine ecosystem and maintain it in that state forever. The Apalachicola Lowlands Preserve is home to 13 species of federally or state listed plants! Proceeds from the tour fee go towards helping us manage the property.

Come out and witness longleaf pine and wetland restoration in action, and see the results of frequent, growing-season burns. The $20 tour fee goes to support our management of this property, including the new bridge that will allow you access to our stunning northwest corner — rich with rare plants and rare habitats like the bog pictured above. Limited to 15 people.

• Pack snacks and water bottle (we'll have a water jug for refills)
• Wear sturdy hiking shoes - we will be walking 3-4 miles throughout our property on unsteady ground
• There is no running water or bathroom facilities on our property
• There is little to no cell service

Cancellation Policy: If we have to cancel for some reason, you will receive a refund in the form of a credit for another tour or ecoadventure, or a full refund. We will notify you if we are fully booked and have a wait list. After that point, you will only receive a cancellation refund if we fill your spot on the tour.
